A Battle Done

25th August – 11th September 2006
Karen Harvey, Enzo Marra, Daniel Pryde-Jarman, Ruth Rogers

A Battle Done may mark surrender or plunder, a victim or victor.
When those assailed upon by decisions to disintegrate with the other, are deposited by that fateful wheel to rest.
A terminus is reached with every battle, to celebrate or despair, to illuminate or disappear.
A strategy reaches a decision, or else it has been made despite itself.
Every opposition requires another to be compromised.

Grey Area stages A Battle Done to celebrate minor insurgencies, surgeries, and skirmished activities.
Witnesses may be in doubt as to whether these events merit the title of ‘battle’ or be better passed off as merely ‘actions’, but regardless of belligerence or subtlety every one of the featured afflictions had an ultimatum imposed upon it.

The placards display statements made by individuals who have accepted defeat after their part in a ‘battle’.
From Beckham to Napoleon; an accepting protest.

Enzo Marra

Incubator, Jake, Tumor

‘The voyeuristic tendency we all have in common forces us to keep looking at Marras' paintings, compelling us to invade these moments of solitude. Occasionally though, for just a moment, you get the feeling you are the one being watched’.

Ruth Rogers

‘I intervene in these images to form poignant and sinister narrative snapshots. They appear to depict built-up areas seen after some ‘event has happened – the streets are empty of people, and trees are uprooted. Its unclear as to what’s caused the event and whether it’s a man-made or natural occurrence – but a sense of ‘unwellness’ is apparent’.
